This year’s YMA Fashion Scholarship Fund dinner will be a very special evening, not just for the more than 100 student scholarship winners, or the group of Geoffrey Beene Scholars who are awarded $30,000 grants, but for the entire apparel business. In celebration of the organization’s 75th anniversary, they have invited every past dinner honoree back to be saluted at the January 10th event at the Waldorf Astoria hotel.

And the list is impressive. The keynote speaker will be 2004 honoree, and Macy’s Chief Merchandising Officer, Jeff Genette. Recent honorees include retail executives Robert Mettler, Vanessa Castagna, Ken Hicks, Stuart Goldblatt, David Fisher, Tom Kingsbury and Rick Leto, Manny Chirico and Ken Duane of PVH, Calvin Klein’s Tom Murry, Karen Murray of Nautica, Kenneth Cole, PEI’s Oscar Feldenkreis and Patty and Jay Baker, as well as entertainment icons Sean “P. Diddy” Combs and Paula Abdul.

Honorees from more than 10 years ago include Ralph Lauren, Allen Sirkin, Tommy Hilfiger, Stuart Glasser, Larry Leeds and a list of others way too long to mention.

The Fashion Scholarship Fund is one industry organization in which the contributions from within the industry really make a difference, according to current president Jim Rosenfeld of F&T Apparel, LLC. In just the last 10 years, the organization has awarded over $1.5 million in scholarships to more than 300 exceptional students pursuing careers in fashion, secured more than 150 internships, with the numbers increasing each year. More than 35 colleges and universities participate in the annual competition. In addition, the Geoffrey Beene Foundation awards $30,000 scholarships to four students each year who submit comprehensive projects based on real industry problems and situations. The foundation also underwrites the cost of the January dinner each year.
