Cartier Fetes Women’s Initiatives

October 10, 2011

TAKING INITATIVE: Fine jewelry brand Cartier today hosted a luncheon in Paris for the 18 finalists of the Cartier Women’s Initiative Awards, which celebrate their fifth anniversary this year.

Among those shortlisted worldwide were two companies with links to fashion. Source4Style, founded by Benita Singh and Summer Rayne Oakes, is a U.S.-based online platform and community for sourcing sustainable, ecological fabrics. “We wanted to turn the sourcing market on its head and create a 365-day a year trade show online,” said Oakes. The duo’s year-old Web site,, will be re-launched in November with additional features, including a thrice-yearly trend report.

U.K.-based accessories brand Elvis & Kresse makes luxury handbags and accessories from recycled materials such as fire hoses and coffee sacks, with 50 percent of profits going to charity. The company works with skilled leather craftspeople who have learned how to cut and stitch the tough nylon-reinforced rubber hoses. “It was like climbing Everest,” said director Kresse Wesling. The six winners of the awards – one for each region – will be announced Friday at the 7th Edition of the Women’s Forum Global Meeting in Deauville, France.

‘Starting up in business has been a taxing venture since 2009, with a sharp decline in access to funding. We are delighted to play our part in helping such enterprising women to develop and scale their businesses and bring bright ideas to the world.’’

Bernard Fornas,
President and CEO of Cartier.
