YMA & CollegeFashionista Interview Michele Manz, Creative Director 7 For All Mankind

Q. Where did you go to college and how would you describe your campus’ style?

I got my fashion degree at the Royal College of Art in London. There was an eclectic mix of styles – glam, punk rock, minimal, avant garde and everything in between. But because it’s a school for the arts, and full of very creative, experimental people, everyone took dressing very seriously. London is such a fashionable city, and just being there definitely refined my eye and continues to influence my design aesthetic.

Q. What is one fall denim must-have every college student should have in their closet?

This season is all about the flare. This fall have an affair with flare! It’s all about flare styles and the continuation of the ‘70s trend that was so huge this summer. We are introducing new flare styles in a range of silhouettes from subtle to dramatic – all featuring the best fits, fabrics, and finishes. The Jiselle is a fantastic new option that we’ve introduced for fall. It has a contoured waistband with a sexy, low front rise and a higher back rise that is both flattering and comfortable. It is slim through the hip and thigh, breaking right below the knee for a phenomenal, sophisticated flared look. The Biancha is even more dramatic, with an exposed button fly chic tailored details that evoke the 70s. Or try the Kaylie, which is our low-breaking boocut – it makes your legs super long and lean.

Q. How do you make 7 For All Mankind jeans so amazing?

Since day one, 7 For All Mankind has been about three things: the perfect fit, the best fabrics, and the most innovative finishes. Each pair of 7 For All Mankind jeans uses the best Italian and Japanese fabrics from the greatest mills in the world. In order to ensure that every pair fits perfectly, every new style undergoes a painstaking fitting process on a live model. Each style is tweaked and perfected over the course of hundreds of hours and dozens of fittings by our team of denim experts. As each pair is washed, it is hand finished – each hole or whisker is placed by hand – so no two pairs are alike and each as unique as its wearer. Our fabrics and washes ensure that each pair of jeans gets better as it ages.

We are constantly experimenting and developing new techniques that the denim world has never seen before. For fall we are incorporating a lot of laser techniques into the collection. We use the lasers to create whiskering and sanded looks on the thigh and knee. We also are experimenting with new dye processes which give a two tone color effect. Some styles feature two colors on the surface while others feature one color on the inside and one color on the outside of the garment. These are just two of the techniques we’ve introduced for the fall season. We are constantly experimenting with new techniques – this spirit of innovation drives our business. New, proprietary finishes are a cornerstone of our brand and are something we take great pride in.

Q. What will you be wearing to FNO and what does 7 For All Mankind have in store for the big event?

I’ll probably decide day-of, but right now it’s between our Aviator pant or our Biancha. They’re both brand new for us, but they’ve each become wardrobe staples for me already. When I was designing the Aviator, I was inspired by iconoclastic women pilots such as Amelia Earhart and Maggie Gee and their style and spirit of adventure. I like to wear the Aviator with heels and a fitted blazer for a look that mixes tough and feminine in a chic, unexpected way. The Biancha is a great, dramatic flare. With heels, a silk top, and some statement jewelry it’s glam enough for a party but the fit is so perfect that it’s still comfortable enough to move and dance!

For FNO we are hosting parties at a few 7 For All Mankind stores from coast to coast. Each of our three stores in New York City will be participating, as well as our stores in Dallas at NorthPark Mall and in Arizona at Kierland Commons. Each store will have a great DJ, we’ll be serving champagne, and if you buy a pair of jeans you can get them hemmed for free. It should be a fun party; nothing’s better than checking out the new fall collection while sipping on some bubbly!
