GINA MARIE SCHIAPPACASSE – ILLUSTRATING FASHION FSF Scholar 2008
“Diva’s Shop (http://www.nycopera.com/aboutus/thriftshop/divas.aspx) is a fundraiser event thrown by the New York City Opera that I was fortunate enough to be able to participate in this year. There was an impressive list of artists/designers who participated in the event ranging from fashion illustrators like Bil Donovan to designers like Nicole Miller, Peter Som, Carolina Herrera, and Erin Featherston. The contributors were asked to sketch/illustrate an opera diva of their choice to be auctioned off in the silent auction with the proceeds going to support the opera. In addition to the art (which was also blown up larger than life size and used to decorate the event space), was a sale with contributions made to the NYC Opera Thrift Shop from designers. I chose to illustrate the Queen of the Night from Mozart’s opera The Magic Flute, an opera I had loved listening to as a child.”
